In this exclusive interview with Victor Vale, the narrator of The Last Book Ever Written, Victor tells us about his childhood, his family, his influences, his dreams, and his fears. This is the first time anyone has heard from Victor since the publication of his book.
Where do you dream of traveling to and why?
When I was a child, I used to dream about going off on my own and discovering the world. Of course none of us has seen anything outside The Nation, but I still felt a yearning that was unfulfilled.
As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I always wanted to be a detective. Ever since I met Detective Conrad, at the age of 10, and he pulled out his badge, with the engraving of the eagle and the silver letters that read “DETECTIVE,” I knew that was what I wanted to be. It looked like pure gold. There was nothing cooler to me, and as I grew older, I became committed to doing my duty to The Nation and protecting the people.
Tell us about your family.
My wife, Anji, is the love of my life. We met at college, and I couldn’t believe a girl like her would devote herself to me. We had a son, Tommy. I really tried to be a good father to him but I didn’t know how…I didn’t know my real father until it was too late. I never had an example to follow.
What was the scariest moment of your life?
What happened to my brother…I still cover my ears every time I hear the whirring of a helicopter.
What books have most influenced your life?
My Autobiography by Sylvester Huppington. I haven’t read anything else.
Do you play any sports?
Blockball. My son has followed in my footsteps and loves to pull the ball to the opposite side of the field.
What would we find under your bed?
Will you tell the TPF? The manuscript is there, of course, and I hope that Iryna or one of the creators have saved it. That is our only hope.
Do your friends think you are an introvert or an extrovert? Why?
Introvert. I’m a detective; I think, solve, deduce. Words must be chosen wisely and delicately. It’s no wonder I felt an odd compulsion to creative writing.
